What Happens When States Are Told to Stay Quiet About AI
A new proposal in the Senate could prevent every state in the country from creating its own rules for artificial intelligence. The condition is simple on the surface. If a state wants access to broadband infrastructure funds, it must agree not to pass any laws that regulate AI for the next ten years.
It may sound procedural, just another legislative tradeoff. But beneath it lies something larger. A growing tension over who should have the right to shape the future of intelligent systems and who gets left out of that process entirely.
Who benefits when no one else is allowed to act
Supporters say the measure will reduce complexity for companies. In their view, a national standard is cleaner, faster, and more business friendly than a tangle of state-level laws. They argue that competing with other nations like China requires removing obstacles.
But others are asking a different kind of question. What happens when the only obstacle being removed is public oversight?
Under this proposal, states would not be allowed to enforce even the most basic protections around how AI is used. Some of the largest AI firms in the world have recently shifted their strategy. After years of asking for responsible regulation, they are now lobbying to pause or remove rules they see as limiting their growth.
